Re: CPF Payout and US Taxes for Former PR

❰❰ Quote:
Over the years, the IRS has issued official memorandums with regard to how CPF is taxed for U.S. persons, so there is zero doubt that CPF is deemed as an employees’ trust under section 402(b)(2) of the tax code.

Unlike other sections, like the well-known 401(k), it is non-qualified (non-deferred), so both employee and employer contributions are taxable in the year made, and growth in the employees’ trust (usually interest earned) is also taxable in the year earned. This means, by the time it comes to withdrawal, everything has been taxable in the past, so it’s just like a withdrawal from an ordinary bank account — a non-taxable event.

Because it falls under 402(b)(2) it also is exempt from foreign trust reporting. The only thing that is required: FBAR reporting and possibly any interest earned in the year your spouse became U.S. taxable. I’m assuming they don’t have anything like CPFIS, as that could .....

LTVP COMPLETION OF FORMALITIES MARCH 2025

Hi all sharing the new process of completion formalities under the new system.

Applied ltvp on Jan 2 2025
Ltvp approved Mar 5 2025

Upon approval, was asked 3 things via MyICA website.

1.to agree to terms and conditions
2.to do medical examination and upload the medical result
3.to upload passport if there's any change of passport from date of application

All communications and uploading of documents is via the ICA website. They will notify you via email for updates only and will ask you to log in to myICA page to complete action.

I uploaded my medical report on the 2nd week of March. We were advised to wait within 10 days for the next step.

After 8 days, was advised to make payment online. As soon as we paid, we received an appointment letter/IPA to complete formalities at ICA bldg on May 8 2025.

So I need to wait for another month and a half for the formalities.

Please note that the date was given by ICA and its automatically given upon payment. Unlike previously, you can .....

Re: Cheapest Way to Mail Tax Return Forms to US IRS?

Additionally, If you are filing from a foreign address and have a balance due and send them a physical cheque, you cannot use any of the alternative delivery services like DHL, FedEx or UPS (which are the only 3 services allowed to be used for the various address that are IRS Offices). The Delivery Services cannot deliver to a PO Box (which is the N. Carolina address for foreign posted returns with enclosed cheques). The PO address in N. Carolina will only accept from the USPS. All others must be sent to the Austin TX address. If you pay electronically however you can send using the Austin TX address using a Delivery Service or the USPS.

Mal, I do the same thing. I refuse to send electronic payments as long as they keep sending me refund cheques for less that the postage is cost them to mail it. Especially when they can direct deposit it into my US account (have given them that info several years ago). But on the initial return I still mail a hard copy and handwritten cheque.

Re: Is it easy to get a reverse payment for online purchase via credit card?

You should always try to contact and resolve with the merchant first. If you are unable to resolve, then contact your cc issuer to lodge a dispute. Yes, reversing a charge is easy, but getting it to stay reversed is not always easy.

The merchant must pay an extra fee once you lodged a dispute, so the incentive to resolve with you is gone and they are less likely to be cooperative. This is why you should try that path first.
