Nationality might be a disadvantage. You can certainly try and hope for the best but be prepared for rejection.

Re: 15 years in Singapore!

Today is my last full day in Singapore and tomorrow is our flight back home, our passes will be cancelled on Monday. The sudden realisation that we may not ever get the chance to come back to this lovely place again.

While saying goodbye to my work colleagues, during the farewell parties, I didnt feel one bit sad, maybe because it has still not dawned on me that I won't be seeing them again.

My wife and daughter are cheerful so far and not showing any emotions of missing Singapore. We are quite busy packing so there is no time for anything.

But then again I realize change is constant, especially so in Singapore. The Singapore I came to in 2009 is not the same anymore, the people are not the same, most have gone, the places too are not the same. So the snapshot of Singapore we lived, will always remain in our mind. Physically, it will always keep evolving and won't be recognizable.

I will keep coming back to this forum to relive some of my best days is this lovely place.

Cheers .....

Singapore vs US education system

I am often perplexed when I see someone attempting to compare Singapore with the US educational system, because few seem to grasp the differences and it often ends with wrong assumptions and spreading of misinformation. After having my kids go through both systems in their entirety, here are my insights:

Primary 1-4 (ages 7-10) is equivalent to US elementary school, grades 1-6 (ages 6-11).

Primary 5-6 (ages 11-12) is equivalent to US middle school (junior high), grades 7-8 (ages 12-13) which prepares kids for transition to secondary education.

Secondary School (ages 13-16) is US high school (ages 14-17). In fact, most universities in the U.S. (except the most selective ones) accept Singapore secondary school graduation as high school equivalent. My 16 year old nephew was just accepted.

Junior College (ages 17-18) is US prep school. This is not a common educational path in the US because college prep courses in the form of Advanced Placement (AP) can be taken in high school, .....
