When talking to Noriko about her work she said ‘my work is about fragments and memories’. This immediately struck me as a good title for an exhibition. I met Noriko and Andrée in November 2007 when we were all participating in a group exhibition about the universal home. We connected during that exhibition, I was showing a few diverse glass pieces that were sand engraved, Andrée was showing piles and piles of drawing and Noriko was knitting.

Both Noriko and Andrée were interested in glass and I was interested to introduce glass to those willing to learn. I love working with glass, and likewise enjoy teaching people how to cut glass, shape it and work with a material that has many different aspects. I knew both artists drew on paper, so why not draw on glass.

I have with Dominic for some years and always admired his drawing ability, on paper as well as on glass. My idea was to bring these 3 artists together so Dominic and I could teach Noriko and Andrée how to ‘draw on glass’. I then invited Noriko and Andrée to come and work in my studio along with Dominic so we could all work together, exchange ideas, share stories and produce glass art within a creative environment.

Thus started our Monday morning sessions. Informally we meet, presented a series of artists’ talks, discuss new ways to work with glass and develop art works. Our arts practices are very diverse, yet we all share a passion for our work and are committed to exploring and developing our work as artists. We have all relocated to Singapore for a variety of different reasons and although our styles are different, the notion of fragments and memories seems to touch us as we work together. As a ‘working title’ the exhibition title weaves a common thread through each of our practices.

These glass-art making sessions have lead to an exchange of ideas and a dialogue about what our works might be with glass. Individual words as fragments emerge. We decided then to select a word as a fragment so that we may each developed a body of work in response to these self-selected words and as a response to the collaborative, cooperative and collective working environment where we have a chance to develop a creative synergy
