Talking WITH your child is a talk organized by a group of SMU students who wish to help parents get started on talking to their children on awkward issues such as sex.
A survey conducted on 100 parents has shown that a majority of the parents feel that they would like to obtain more information about getting started with the topic. A second survey conducted on teens age ranging from 8.-20 has also shown that most children today are not comfortable talking to their parents about sex as they feel that their parents would rather not talk about it. In fact, most of the children have said that they are not comfortable talking to their parents about a lot of other issues such as relationships and feelings.
However, we believe that parents should play a more important role in their children’s lives. We hope that we would be able to increase communication between parents and children through this talk. The talk would not only touch on how to talk to children about sex but also tips on how to further enhance general communication between parent and child.
Our speaker, Liz Gay is a certified trainer with the International Center for Nonviolent Communication, an NLP Master Practitioner and a certified People Developer Consultant. She has provided training to CEOs, scholars, parents, teachers, performance coaches, prison inmates and staff, business managers and members of various religious organizations, amongst others.
The talk is absolutely free and there will also be a resource package given which will contain some tips on enhancing communication.
It will be held on the 4th of Nov 2006 at the YMCA orchard from 930am to 1.30pm.
